13 Inches High
This sculpture was based on Jean-Léon Gérôme’s painting Phryne before the Areopagus (Phryné devant l’Areopage) (1861). Gérôme’s father-in-law, Adolphe Goupil, was an art dealer who also published photo engravings after Salon paintings. He commissioned Falguière to create the sculpture of Phryne and then offered the piece in several sizes and materials throughout the 19th century.
