George Gordon Byron, better known as Lord Byron (1788-1824), was a British poet who was one of the leading figures of the Romantic movement. He has been well-known since his time, and also had a reputation for being promiscuous. The artist, Pierre Joseph Chardigny (1794-1866), was a French sculptor and medalist who attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He made a series of busts of famous individuals including Lord Byron, William Shakespeare, and George Washington that were cut squarely and had the subject’s name inscribed on the front, flat surface.
