This relief depicts characters from the book of the same name by Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) that was published in two parts in 1605 and 1615. The full Spanish title is El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha. In the relief, Don Quixote is seen riding on horseback and leading his squire, Sancho Panza, who rides a donkey. The two characters have been the subject of many artworks and have become recognizable figures. Inscribed on the top right of the face is “DON QUICHOTE.”
