The original sculpture is a Roman copy of a Greek original from the late third century, and is also known as the Dying Trumpeter. It was set up at Pergamum in the last half of the third century to commemorate the victory of Attalus I over the invading Gauls. It is thought to be the work of the sculptor Epigonus.
