Thorvaldsen created two life-size versions of Hebe, one in 1806 and one in 1816. The second, this piece, is nearly identical to the first except that the chest is fully covered by clothing. Hebe is the Greek goddess of youth whose task it was to pour the drink of immortality for the other gods and goddesses.
